BIM and Pipeline Optimization

Concept:

Building Information Modeling, short for BIM, is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle, defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. Integrating the information of project through parametric model, sharing and transmitting during the life-cycle of project planning, operation and maintenance makes engineers master the information of building and react efficiently. In addition, it provides a foundation of cooperation for design team and construction units, playing an important role in enhancing productivity, saving the costs and reducing the erection time. It has five features that are visualized, coordinated, simulated, optimized and plotted.

Significance:
In electromechanical engineering project of modern building, as the pipeline integrity requirement of intelligent building becomes higher and higher, the cooperation of professions involved of water supply and drainage, fire protection, ventilation, air conditioning, electric and intelligentization, will directly bear on the quality, erection time, investment and expected effect of the project. Therefore, pipeline detailed design is necessary.
BIM involves representing a design as combinations of "objects" – vague and undefined, generic or product-specific, solid shapes or void-space oriented (like the shape of a room), that carry their geometry, relations and attributes. BIM design tools allow extraction of different views from a building model for drawing production and other uses. These different views are automatically consistent, being based on a single definition of each object instance. BIM software also defines objects parametrically; that is, the objects are defined as parameters and relations to other objects, so that if a related object is amended, dependent ones will automatically also change. Each model element can carry attributes for selecting and ordering them automatically, providing cost estimates as well as material tracking and ordering.
The application of BIM for pipeline simulation can integrate the 2D drawings of pipeline and make them visualized. Besides, it enables pipeline collision check at construction stage and design optimization so that reduce evitable cost and probability of rework, more convenient to undertake technical disclosure. Through 3D pipeline integrity to get the BIM model, it not only visualizes the pipeline layout, but also provides the effect of space roaming experience. BIM is the virtual reflection in computer of a real system, the pipeline facilities units contain complete data and information, convenient for property maintenance.
